I have already shared my Top 5 Books of 2007. Here are the 5 books I am most looking forward to reading in 2008:
- I Come Away Stronger: How Small Groups are Shaping American Religion – Ed. Robert Wuthnow
- Deepening Your Effectiveness: Restructuring the Local Church for Life Transformation – Dan Glover and Claudia Lavy
- Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations – Bishop Robert Schnase
- The Great Upheaval: America and the Birth of the Modern World, 1788 – 1800 – Jay Winik
- Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living – Rueben P. Job
And it just so happens that I got all five of these books for Christmas! Lucky me.
If you are interested you can find a list of books that I don’t have that I am hoping to read eventually here.
What books are you really looking forward to reading?

Kevin – Thanks for the great post and the book recommendations. I hope you don’t mind if I borrow the idea for a post as well…
Andrew – Borrow away. Isn’t imitation supposed to be the highest form of flattery? My wordpress theme is, after all, “borrowing” the one that you were already using (with a different color scheme)…
Kevin – Thanks, friend. Look for it in a few weeks or so. 🙂
Thanks for providing an interesting list of reading suggestions. And I’m looking forward to your thoughts on “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations.” I hope it proves helpful. Note that we’ve now begun a website and some blogging on the topic at FivePractices.org. Alongside Un-Christian, let me suggest another book for consideration that focuses on younger generations and their response to and perceptions of the church: AFTER THE BABY-BOOMERS: How Twenty and Thirty Somethings are Shaping the Future of American Religion by Robert Wuthnow. It strikes some of the same themes as UnChristian, but with more research, etc. Thanks for your good work, Blessings, Robert Schnase
Bishop Schnase – Thank you for stopping by! We actually just started reading “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations” in a clergy peer group that is meeting here in Lamont once a week. So, I will be sure to pass on the FivePractices.org website to the other pastors in the district. Thanks for mentioning “After the Baby-Boomers,” it is actually another book I was given for Christmas, but just didn’t quite make my top 5 list. It has been helpful to read it right after Un-Christian because Wuthnow documents the research behind his writing more thoroughly than Kinnaman and Lyons do. Again, it is great to hear from you, thanks for stopping by!
