My daughter Bethany has now met five great grandparents. I think that is amazing. To my knowledge I had two living great grandparents when I was born, and I was lucky enough that they both lived until I was a teenager. I was able to meet one of them once and get to know the other one very well. Of course, I have no idea what the future holds, but I feel blessed that people who were so important to me have been able to meet my first child.
Bethany met great grandparents four and five (my dad’s parents) this weekend when we went to visit them in Rochester, MN. We had a wonderful time. My life has been enriched by being the grandson of these wonderful people and they have both served as positive examples for me in many ways.
Kevin,
That is very cool. I knew 3 of my great-grandparents. My great -granddad lived until I was in college. He died one month short of his 95th birthday. Granddad was in the ministry for about 80 years (started at the age of 14 or 15). On my wall hang the citation and proclamation from Gov. George Nigh recognizing Granddad’s contribution to the state of Oklahoma. At the time of his death Granddad was the longest tenured minister in the state of Oklahoma.
I learned much about faith, life and family from Granddad. I pray your daughter will be able to enjoy the same blessing I did from all of my grandparents and great-grandparents.
Research has found that children who have positive relationships with grandparents or a grandparent figure do better in school. That is why some schools have a volunteer grandparent program.
Dee – Thanks for the comment. It sounds like your granddad was an amazing man. I appreciate your prayer for my daughter. The research that you shared is especially interesting. It is great that grandparents are not just a lot of fun, but they can help make you smarter!
I don’t about smarter but certainly wiser and more respectful.
